A patio carries people and furniture. A driveway carries a vehicle that concentrates a couple of tons onto four contact patches the size of a hand, and does it in the same wheel tracks several times a day for years.

Poor draining soil, a slope, or a heavier vehicle pushes it toward the top of the range. The number is not a preference. It is what spreads the wheel load out wide enough that the clay underneath never sees a concentrated point of pressure.
Compaction in lifts, and why one deep pass does not work
A plate compactor or roller only densifies so far below the surface. Put twelve inches of aggregate in the hole and run a compactor over the top and you get a dense crust with loose material underneath it.
It looks finished. It is not. The loose middle consolidates slowly under traffic over the following year or two, and the surface follows it down.
Done correctly the base goes in as lifts of three to four inches, each one compacted before the next goes on. A twelve inch base is three or four separate compaction passes, not one. It takes longer, it costs more in labour, and it is completely invisible the moment the next lift covers it.
That is why it is the first thing cut from a quote that needs to win on price.
Ruts mean the base, not the pavers
If a driveway develops dips along the wheel tracks, that is the base consolidating. People assume the pavers are failing and start looking at replacing them, which is the wrong repair for the right symptom.
The good news is that the pavers are salvageable. The fix is to lift the affected area, correct and recompact the base, and relay the original stones. Edge restraint, the part nobody asks about
A paver field holds together by interlock. Each unit is held by its neighbours, and the whole field acts as a flexible plate.
That only works if the outermost row cannot move. If the edge is free, turning vehicles push the field sideways, the outer row creeps outward, and joints open progressively from the edge inward. Once that starts it does not stop on its own.
Edge restraint is a rigid border, usually a concrete haunch or a proprietary edging spiked into the base, that pins the outer course. On a patio it matters. On a driveway, where steering loads generate the highest lateral forces the surface will ever see, it is structural.
If a driveway quote does not mention edge restraint, ask.
Water, again
Water under a base softens the clay it is bearing on. Soft clay under a wheel load is where ruts come from.
A driveway needs a fall that takes surface water somewhere sensible, a base of clean angular aggregate rather than material with fines that hold moisture, and often a drain at the low point. On a driveway that slopes toward a garage this is not a detail, it is the whole design.
How to read a driveway quote
Four questions. Ask every bidder the same four:
- How deep is the excavation, and how deep is the compacted base?
- Is the base compacted in lifts? How many?
- What edge restraint is used?
- Where does the water go?
A contractor who builds driveways properly will answer all four without hesitating, because those answers are the job. Vague answers on these points are the single most reliable predictor of a driveway that ruts inside three years.
Price differences between quotes almost always live in questions one and two. That is not a coincidence. It is where most of the cost and all of the lifespan are.
